n this edition of "Behind the Business," we feature a seasoned massage therapist whose journey from the corporate world to holistic healing is truly remarkable. With over 26 years of experience and a deep passion for healing, he has become a pillar of wellness in Jeffreys Bay. Read on to discover his fascinating journey and dedication to his craft

Chris's fascination with the intricate workings of the human body began at just 15, sparking a lifelong passion for understanding muscles, anatomy, and their complex functions, which eventually led to a fulfilling career in massage therapy.

Chris explained that his journey began many years ago when he went to Zurich, Switzerland, for training as a Shiatsu Therapist in 1998. In the same year, he had the opportunity to receive additional training as a Bodyworker in Perth, Australia, where he completed studies in Trigger Point Therapy and Reflexology.

He noted that, as a Bodyworker and Massage Therapist, one needs at least 200 hours of actual client practice before they can start labeling themselves. Therefore, he worked on weekends, evenings, and his days off, offering treatments and furthering his studies during those times. It was during this period that he began building client relationships and managed to establish a solid client base.

Chris is now a qualified Clinical Therapist (the highest level of Therapy in Massage Therapy) and also accredited through the CAMS, (Complementary and Alternative Medical Science, Institute.

He works in correlation with Chiropractors, Homeopaths, Physiotherapists, and General Practitioners.

He is qualified in Reflexology, Life Coaching / Behavioural Science, Clinical Psychiatry, Cupping Therapy, Shiatsu, Reiki Master, Crystal Healing & Meditation and a Bodyworker

Chris also encouraged starting at a young age, noting that some of their current pupils are 14, 15, and 17 years old.

He explained that they treat minors because posture alignment is extremely important during their developmental stage when the spinal cord and growth hormones are shaping the individual for the future. He emphasized that sportsmen and women of all ages should make an effort to meet with him for guidance and assistance, mentioning various sports like rugby, soccer, surfing, and swimming

He mentioned that he had worked in the corporate sector, gaining business acumen in Property Management, Conveyancing, Operations Management, Sales, Facilities Management, Fleet & Transport Management, Finance & Auditing, Hospitality, Beauty, Health & Fitness.

n 2013, he resigned from the corporate lifestyle to follow his true calling and passion—healing individuals who suffer from chronic ailments, muscle spasms, and body aches. His practice quickly gained momentum in Johannesburg, expanding to a client base of 700 from around the globe, including clients who visited him on business trips from Dubai, Toronto, and Amsterdam.

Chris said that he schedules a consultation session with each client to determine the appropriate course of action, after which he compiles an individual program for them. He also provides feedback during each session and guides clients with exercise techniques and programs to follow.

When asked what sets his practice apart from other massage therapy providers in the area, he highlighted his 26 years of industry experience. He explained that he has the ability to work with energy vibrations sensed during consultations, allowing him to identify recent or past injuries, which could be related to childhood incidents, motor vehicle accidents, or trauma.

He also emphasized that he listens carefully and takes the time to understand each client's entire history. He works until the treatment is complete, rather than adhering strictly to a time clock. Although he has set times for treatments, these are only guidelines, as each client is different and unique.

When asked what he enjoys most about living and working in Jeffreys Bay, he said it was the people, the friendly community, and the interactions. He told me that he had relocated to Jeffreys Bay a year ago, originally from Johannesburg but had lived in Port Alfred for a while.

When not working, he likes to relax and unwind by meditating to replenish his energy levels and spending time on the beach. He thoroughly enjoys gardening, finding it extremely satisfying and rewarding.

Regarding his goals for the business in the next few years, he aims to expand his practice, service and heal more clients, add value, and contribute to the growth of the community.

What tips do you have for people looking to improve their overall wellness?

“Listen to your body. You know your body better than anyone else. The problem is that we are so busy with other things, that we don’t take the time to listen to the needs of our body/ies. If you are thirsty, drink water. If you crave salt or sugar, feed your body as it is trying to tell you that it requires attention.”
